Preparing for Trek

Over the coming months, we encourage you to prepare spiritually and physically for Trek.

Trek is one of those events you will get out what you put into it!

Your positive attitude and willingness to participate on Trek will make all the difference.

Spiritual Preparation

Trek can be one of the most spiritual experiences you will have in your life. During Trek, you will have experiences designed to help you feel the Spirit. The more spiritually prepared you are, the more meaningful the experiences will be for you!

Here are some suggestions to help you prepare spiritually, please choose the ones that will help you the most. Or come up with your own!

  • Read the scriptures daily

  • Pray daily – pray for experiences you hope to have on Trek

  • Go to the temple (take names from your Family Tree)

  • Read Ether 12:4 and consider how this scripture applies to you and Trek

  • Attend your church meetings (Sunday meetings, seminary, youth activities)

  • Read pioneer stories – identify pioneers in your own family history and find an ancestor you can take on Trek

  • Read Joseph Smith’s History and ponder why the pioneers were willing to face hardships and sacrifice so much for their beliefs

  • Watch a pioneer movie – Ephraim’s Rescue, 17 Miracles, The Fighting Preacher

  • Read a conference talk about the pioneers and their obedience, hope and faith

  • Dedicate your fast in June to the Trek experience and to everyone that will participate

Physical Preparation

Trek can be a challenging physical experience. The terrain we will hike includes hills and rugged paths. We recommend that you begin a walking routine with varying levels of difficulty. Start by walking 3 times a week, 1-2 miles each time. As your endurance increases, increase your time and distance. Gradually increase to 3-5 miles at a time, and do that at least once a week.

If you don’t already have hiking or athletic shoes, now is the time to purchase a pair and start breaking them in! You want your shoes properly broken in by Trek.

Other suggestions:

  • Go on walks with friends or family

  • Gather the necessary belongings and clothing for Trek (see Packing List)

  • Run or walk on varying terrain and distances

  • Build up your water intake
